Originally referred to as Clements, the town only had 277 citizens before disappearing from the census until 1980.

The gardens were Bessie’s dream and life-long work. However, after her passing, Walter opened them to the public in 1932, and, since then, the gardens have grown in both size and attraction. The gardens are available for special events and just for visitation. The Bellingrath home is also open to the public today with tours of the home running throughout the day. The home is perfectly preserved with the couple’s furnishings, bathrooms and even china, so visitors can take a tour through a home where time stands still.
Theodore is also home to several notable figures, many of whom are famous for their contributions to athletics. Theodore is home to major league baseball star Bernie Cabo, as well as minor league baseball player Kentrail Davis. Baltimore Ravens linebacker C.J. Moseley is a Theodore native. Former NFL players Willie Quinnie and Andre Royal also received their start in Theodore. These individuals prove that big talents come from even the smallest of towns!
